Rants

There are many different styles and colors of prom dresses that are gorgeous, and look great on whoever’s wearing them. One style that I cannot get behind is white or feathered prom dresses. White prom dresses seem silly when there are so many color options. In most cases, white prom dresses look too close to wedding dresses, and should be avoided. Feathers on prom dresses are not always bad if done in a simple fashion, but feels busy with other things happening on a dress.

Prom can be fun, but at the same time it can be a pain to get everything ready for prom. To rent a tux it costs between $100 and $300 for just one night. And, to buy a dress, it can cost between $200 and $600. Another thing that is annoying about prom is all of the time needed to be prepared. It takes almost a month for tuxedos and dresses to be shipped. The Grand March is also annoying because you get your 2 minutes to walk out, and then have to watch the rest for almost 2 hours.

The only reason the long tradition of prom is still going is because it’s an easy way to disguise the stresses and struggles of our highschool years. Prom is supposed to mark a milestone in our lives. It’s meant to be something students look back to when they think about their youth. But what is its actual purpose? What does it symbolize? Prom is expensive, stressful and time consuming. Now I’m not excluding myself from this phenomenon, but it is truly so absurd that so many students spend so much time and effort into a one-night high school dance.

Prom is such a fun time. You get to go to the Grand March and if you aren’t a junior or senior, at least you can watch the Grand March, but then you can go to After Prom and go bowling. Like come on, who doesn’t want free bowling. Prom is a time where everyone can hangout and dance then go and eat food and go bowling. If you are good at bowling, show off your skills and if you’re not, you can just go for fun and talk and enjoy the fun night. Prom has also become this dance where you don’t even have to go with a partner – you could just go with a group of friends. And going with friends, you don’t have to worry about staying with your partner, you can go hangout and you don’t have to worry about anything.

Allowing sophomores and freshmen to attend After Prom is a great idea: allowing all students to attend the After Prom is a great way to bring together multiple grades. There are few opportunities to do this besides pep rallies. Furthermore, sophomores who were asked out by a junior or senior are unable to attend with their friends who may be other sophomores or freshmen. The After Prom is a way for other sophomores and freshmen to be able to participate in such a large gathering. It adds to the highschool experience and makes students look forward to their prom in the upcoming years.

I love watching the Grand March. The way the spotlights follow the girls and their guy-friends. I love the sprinkle of people who go alone, or in groups. It’s so fun to see the way people choose to dress themselves nicely. Grand March is definitely under-valued.
