Khaliq Austin, a Bismarck High freshman, is stopping the show by being the youngest player on the varsity basketball team. Austin is the brother of senior basketball player Andre Austin, who is committed to a D2 school, the University of Mary. Basketball runs thick in the Austin family, generating a notable name for both brothers.
Khaliq began playing sports at a young age—so young, he states, that he’s been playing basketball since he learned to walk. Basketball has undoubtedly created a deep tradition and high expectations within the Austins’ home.
“I started playing because my Dad and other family members played, so I wanted to,” said Khaliq.
Playing basketball is not a hobby but a competitive passion both brothers pursue. Andre has paved the way for Khlaliq, welcoming him into a supportive high school environment. The competitive nature of being brothers has translated onto the court, pushing Khaliq to compete at the next level.
Khaliq states, “We always try and push each other to be better players all the time, but it’s all out of love.”
Transitioning from middle school A team to High School varsity is a huge leap, but he can learn quickly with older, supportive figures guiding him.
“They are always positive and fun to be around,” Khaliq states.“It’s been a cool experience, and I’m very thankful for all the support and motivation.”
He’s focused heavily on learning how to be a good teammate, hoping to go far in the postseason.
“My main goal this year is just to win state,” Khaliq said.
Every season of whatever sport presents challenges, but for Khaliq, those challenges have been steadily overcome. With an older brother on the court with him, he’s been able to make unique memories and get ready for the years to come.
Khalig said, “This will be one of my most memorable years playing basketball.”
