One Bismarck High School senior almost made it through all four years of high school without getting a parking ticket. Earlier this month, the student, who asked to remain anonymous, got cited for parking too close to a crosswalk. This student says everything about the ticket was frustrating.
“I don’t start my school day until the third period so often the parking lot is full by the time I get to school,” they said. “The other day I parked in a spot on the street where I have seen people parked every single day since I was a freshman. I had no idea that it wasn’t a parking spot and was very frustrated to find a ticket on my windshield.”
The parking lot is filled with frustrations, for students and teachers. When drivers take up three spots, park on the lines, or create their own parking space that also creates headaches for other drivers. Sloppy parking means there are fewer spots available in the parking lots, and forces many students to park on the street, where the chance of getting a ticket increases.
Often, the bad parking jobs in the lot are highlighted on the Instagram page “demonscantpark.” The page is filled with pictures of cars parked on the lines, taking up two, sometimes even three spots.
“I thought it would be fun to take pictures of everyone’s nice cars, the dumb stuff laying around the parking lot, along with the horrible parking.” Lillian Makeeff-Stetson said. Makeeff-Steson runs the Instagram page and says there is no shortage of bad parking to share. “It’s now turned into a joke because people purposely park in stupid spots just to get posted, and they do!”
She said writing tickets is othing personal. It is Therisa Thompson’s job is to issue parking tickets at BHS. She said writing tickets is nothing personal. It’s her job to make sure students are parking legally.
Thompson says there are some easy ways to make sure you don’t get a ticket or become Instagram famous by being featured in a post on “demonscantpark”. The page is filled with pictures of cars parked on the lines, taking up two, sometimes even three spots.

Parking taking up three spots. Parking like this might save a spot for your friend, but it will end up with you getting a ticket.
