Students all around Bismarck High School have agreed that the parking lot is inconvenient and messy. Something needs to change with the BHS parking lot. The lot fills up quickly and students are forced to park on the surrounding streets of the school. This is problematic for the people who live on these streets because the streets are packed with cars practically bumper to bumper.
One of the streets that has a huge problem is Eighth St. If there was a fire on Eighth St. the Fire Department wouldn’t be able to get to the fire hydrant due to students parking in front of it.
One solution to finding more parking space could be eliminating the kickball field. During the school year, gym classes only use it a handful of times. This also depends on if the weather permits students to be outside. Eliminating the kickball field would allow the school to get multiple rows of new parking spaces. If more space was added, the school could consider giving seniors a reserved spot that they can paint. That would be a fun addition to the school, increasing school involvement and spirit. It could also work as a reward system, if a senior is in the top percent of their class they should be rewarded with a reserved parking spot.
Another issue is the poor parking jobs. There are multiple witnesses for terrible and lazy parking. When people park badly, it also leads to more parking space being taken up. Students have even taken the initiative to start social media pages outing cars with poor parking. The parking lots are treated poorly with trash and litter covering the ground. This not only looks bad for the school but also for the users of the parking lot.
Another problematic occurrence is that the school sells more parking passes than actual spaces. Many students have parking passes but end up parking on the streets year-round. This is not only a waste of money, but also just annoying. Overall, BHS’ parking is atrocious and crowded. If you can’t park in the lines, don’t park in the lot at all.
