With social media rising within the last couple of years, the idea of love and romance has changed drastically. There is more online dating through apps like Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram.
According to Liberty Champion Newspaper, “The social media algorithm is designed to show you content you are interested in but depending on the type of content you interact with, it can sometimes backfire. Videos like “5 Ways to Know He’s Cheating on You” or “How to Tell if She Has Lost Interest” often show up on people’s feeds, creating new insecurities. When you interact with even one of these posts, more similar videos will begin to appear.
Common ways that cause couples to fight with each other in this day in age can be simple interactions on social media have turned into a way that influences couples to break up. A like or comment from an ex on a post, a repost of TikTok, a post on Instagram, or even a photo that sent over Snapchat. A study conducted by Pew Research Center said, “48% of people aged 18-29 have shared or discussed their relationships on social media platforms, but 91% of 18-29-year-olds have seen other people post about their relationships.” On social media, it looks as though everyone else’s relationships are perfect, but their own isn’t. This can cause fights between couples saying things like “Why isn’t our relationship like this?” or “Look at how much better of a significant other they are than you.” This is not healthy because as most people would know, relationships on social media are extremely sugar-coated.
Overall, the aspect of relationships over social media has not been great for romance and in some ways has killed it. Having face to face conversations and telling the other person what is going on is a great way to keep a relationship from being ruined by social media.
