Going into the Minecraft Movie, I was expecting a hilarious but mediocre film. I was surprised, as I got much more than this. I wouldn’t call the movie a cinematic masterpiece, but I had a good time watching it. The movie has beautiful environments, many of which were physically crafted sets. Everything is cube-shaped and looks as though it was pulled straight out of the video game. The computer-generated imagery (CGI) was very good as well. All of the animals and enemies had very realistic textures, making them look alive. The acting and costumes were very strong as well, making each character stand out. The story was pretty interesting as well. The entire film pulls aspects from Minecraft spin-off games such as “Minecraft Dungeons” and “Minecraft Legends”, but this can be seen most clearly in the movie’s narrative. Henry and his older sister Natalie, their real estate agent named Dawn, and Garett, an 80’s video game world champion turned store owner, all get sucked into a portal that transports them to the Overworld. There, they meet Steve, a man who has been living in the overworld for a long time. Together, they go on an adventure to collect an item that will allow Natalie, Henry, Dawn, and Garett to return home. The humor was definitely one of the film’s high points. Every character has funny lines, but Jack Black’s “Steve” and Jason Momoa’s “Garett” really steal the show. The small rivalry that the two characters have offers very funny scenes as they both try to lead the group. The film’s music, along with many easter eggs, will fill anyone who has played Minecraft with nostalgia. This is a large part of what makes the movie enjoyable. People who are unfamiliar with the game will still have some amount of fun with the movie, but the constant references to the game are a big part of what makes the movie truly enjoyable. Overall, “A Minecraft Movie” is a solid, comedic film that anyone can enjoy, but appeals most to people who have spent time with the original game.
