The current bathroom located between the Knaak gym and the music department is run-down, smelly and too small. Two stalls and one sink are not enough for such a busy hub. The bathroom is the closest option for gym, social studies, music and a portion of the art and AVID classes.
There are three other bathrooms that are new, large, and clean, located in the same area, but they are locked during class hours. The only time some of them are open is during sporting or music events and during summer school. It is annoying to have to walk farther to a bathroom when there are other ones closer. If teachers do not want students to take a long time leaving class to use the restroom, the locked bathrooms or the locker rooms should be left open. Having to walk halfway across the school just to use the restroom is unreasonable.
The small, available bathroom is used so much that even when cleaned, they get dirty quickly because of constant use. The atmosphere of the bathroom itself is stuffy and dark due to the poor lighting. And to top it all off, the singular soap dispenser often runs out, and the unfunctional toilets will flush rapidly for a long amount of time without stopping, preventing anyone from using that stall.
Poor quality leads students not to use the restroom. It takes up too much class time when students have to walk up the stairs and travel near the choir room or to the main bathrooms located even further.
Bathrooms are often seen as hangout spots for drug abuse, gossip, or phone usage, so when individuals use the space as a hangout spot, the bathroom is almost completely unusable to those who simply need to get in and get out.
There needs to be a new bathroom between the Knaak gym and the music department because the current one is too small, outdated and abused by those who use it. There are not enough stalls for such a large area.
