Veterans Day, a day for appreciation

Veterans Day is a very important day in society to recognize our veterans that fought for us and put their lives on the line every single day. It is very important to thank our veterans, either writing a thank you card, making a sign, or even just saying “thank you” to them in person.

The holiday is recognized in order for the general population to reflect about how fortunate we are as a country to have honorable men and women who serve to protect our freedoms. Doing as little as sending a thank you message to someone you know who is in the military or once was can go a long way toward showing gratitude for their service. Volunteering is also another great way to spend Veteran’s Day. What the general public can do is support veteran-owned businesses. There are many volunteering opportunities that support veterans and are also a great way to give back to the community.

Another way to give back to veterans is bringing awareness to the problem that most veterans seeking employment face difficulty because of a “lack of resources, underemployment and not having a four-year college degree” according to a report from CBS News. Also from CBS News, “more than half of veterans remain unemployed for four months or longer after leaving the military.” In actuality, veterans are generally well equipped to work because of the technical training and skills they learn that are unique to being enlisted. There are organizations like HireHerosUSA who assist veterans making the transition from the military to the workforce.

While many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember our lost ones that passed away in battle. Veterans Day is  to recognize and thank our veterans that still stand. Just because there is a set day to remember our veterans and freedom does not mean we can only take it into consideration for one day. It is important to remember that our freedom is priceless and that our veterans deserve the recognition. Giving us the day off of school gives us the opportunity to consider the sacrifice that was made for us by our veterans.
