Lessons can be learned anywhere. Senior gymnast Gabriela Garcia has learned some of the most valuable life lessons in the gym.
“I have learned a great deal throughout gymnastics, a lot about discipline and perseverance. Gymnastics is a lot about not giving up even when setbacks arise, and that progress takes time and effort,” Garcia states.
She hopes these lessons will help her continue to be a role model for other people in a way the same as her younger teammates look up to her. She said she always makes it a point to encourage her teammates on and off the beam and works hard to be an example of how hard work and dedication pay off. She says past teammates taught her the importance of leading by example.
Despite Garcia’s positive attitude, she admits it has not always been easy. She says mental strain is a real part of all sports, but hopes others see the confidence she has gained through gymnastics.
“I think gymnastics is a lot different from a lot of other sports and it highly depends on having a good mindset. Gymnastics has taught me a lot about dedication, perseverance, and discipline. All 3 of these are a huge part of gymnastics, without them you cannot move forward and I believe learning them from a young age shaped me into the person I am today,” Garcia believes.
Hard practices challenge the level of perseverance, but Garcia feels lucky her teammates are there for support. Gymnastics has created valuable relationships that help support the love of the sport.
“We all love each other like family, and there is no better feeling than everyone rushing over to give you a hug after a good routine”
Making the most of this final season is what is pushing Garcia to continue advancing. With the endless support from both family and teammates, she is forever grateful.
