The Santa Run will be celebrating its 12th annual year.
“A portion of proceeds has gone to support addiction recovery services in the community, particularly through Hope Manor in Bismarck.” Executive Director of the Mandan Progress Organization Matt Schanandore said.
400 to 500 participants were expected to partake in the event. Preparation for the race takes plenty of planning.
“Participants not only get a t-shirt but also a Santa suit that they can wear as they run, which is different from other races,” Schanandore said.
This year, planning looks different because the event is held in Mandan for the first time instead of Bismarck.
“It was hosted in Bismarck for ten years,” Shanandore said. “The event takes around three months to plan.”
Community and financial support help keep the Santa Run running every year.
“Multiple local businesses or community groups support the event through sponsorships and partake in it as well,” Shanandore said.
The event’s goal is meant to unify the community.
“Finding joy in the community for people with addictions was the reason the event was created,” Shanadore said.
The holiday theme encourages people to come and get some physical activity.
“It is a nice way to get some outdoor recreation, whether it is running or walking; it keeps people outside in the fresh air,” Shanandore said. “The Santa theme is just a fun way of connecting the two pieces to get people out participating in the 5k.”
Even people who are not participating in the event will come out and watch it.
“It is a unique experience to watch 400 Santas start running on Main Street for a race,” Shanandore said.
This event is meaningful for the participants who take part in it.
“The Santa Run is such a fun community event,” BHS cross country coach, Janelle Olson said. “I am a mentor for Team Kaizen, a youth running group.” Bismarck High Schools Cross Country Coach Janelle Olson said.
The Santa race atmosphere creates a positive environment serving the community.
“It is quite a sight to see—a sea of running Santas,” Olson said. “It is a fun, festive event and gives back to our community.”
The event brings the community together.
“Being part of the Santa Run community event means connection and belonging. It’s a chance to come together with people from different backgrounds, support one another, and contribute something bigger than myself,” Olson said. “Participants get to actively engage with others to build relationships, share experiences, and create a positive impact. It reminds me that progress and change happen best when people work together.”
