On December 2nd, Senior Jillian Quale had been told she was to go down to the auditorium for a headshot that would be used for her application. To her surprise, Fedorchak and many of Quale’s friends and family were waiting in the auditorium to congratulate her nomination – the nod of approval.
“I was very surprised. I knew my mom was keeping something from me, but I had no clue what. I was not expecting to walk in there and see so many people that I knew,” Jillian said. “It’s very surreal, because I get the chance to apply to a really great academy that will give me a great education and let me serve my country.”
Every year, the United States Representatives get to choose two students in their state who are pursuing a path in military services. Fedorchak has chosen Jillian as her first nominee.
“You earned it. I’m really impressed by you,” Fedorchak said at the surprise announcement. ”I’m thrilled to have you as my very first nominee.”
To receive the nod of approval, Jillian had to show that she was qualified. Fedorchak reviewed her academic and athletic performances as well as her character and work ethic.
“I am very proud of Jillian. Jillian does not give up. When she sets her mind to something, she works to achieve it,” Jillian’s Mother, Erica Quale, said. “I am very proud of Jillian.”
Jillian is applying to the U.S Naval Academy. If Jillian is accepted, she will run D1 track, receive a fully-paid education, and serve our country for a minimum of five years.
“It’s such a noble profession, very brave, tough, and courageous,” Fedorchak said.
Erica is positive that Jillian will be accepted because of her go-getter attitude and her positive outlook on life.
“The coaches there are very interested in her. Not just her track talent, but her work ethic and personality. I feel that once you meet Jilian, her attitude on life is contagious,” Erica said.
At the Naval Academy, Jillian will be surrounded by other students who share the same goals, creating a positive but competitive environment. She looks forward to running track and getting a top-notch education, but she’s most eager to serve her country.
“Growing up, I have always felt called to serve our country, and I am so grateful that I could get the chance to do that,” Jillian said.
